The Prune Juice Diet: Does it Really Work

An increasing number of people call on their doctors in search of information on a trendy new phenomenon called the prune juice Diet. People are looking for the best way to shed extra weight and feel more healthy and energetic. They have heard about the abundance of benefits that a juice fast delivers. However, a prune juice fast is very different from a juice fast. It is important to understand the side effects that could come from such a laxative Diet.

Years of coaching personal clients in NYC has led me to the conclusion that juice fasting is hands down the most powerful thing you can do to supercharge your Health and melt the inches between you and the body of your dreams. And it’s the fastest route there. (They don’t call it a fast for nothin’!) However, fasting on prune juice is not recommended. In fact, I strongly advise against it. Here’s why.

Prune juice can be beneficial to ones Health in small amounts. It’s not just an old wives tale that prune juice has laxative effects, it does. But it’s much easier and healthier to address ‘prevention’ of constipation, then it is to allow a situation to unfold where the “going gets tough”, so tough that laxatives or foods with laxative properties, like prune juice are needed.

Laxatives are known to stimulate the process of peristalsis. Peristalsis is a series of contractions that take place in the digestive tract. When food is present, the contractions are responsible for moving the waste through so that it is excreted from the body. Fasting on prune juice, however, would hinder this process, as there would be no waste that would need to be eliminated. This would make the contractions very painful and they could even become quite dangerous. Juice fasts, however, are great for purposes of energizing the digestive tract. It is also very good for cleaning the body both internally and externally. This makes a juice fast the perfect option for rapidly shedding pounds and regaining your inner glow of vitality.

I advise my clients to consume a rainbow variety of juices on their fasts and to “eat their colors”. The cleansing effect from taking in enzyme rich juices that are chock full of vitamins and minerals will take care of any problems of one might have in the bathroom, cleaning out the entire digestive tract and leaving you refreshed and lighter in no time flat!
