Slimming With Doughnuts
Erin McNulty is living the American dream as a stay-at-home mom in idyllic Rambling Springs. Her days are filled with decorating, socializing, and raising her son. Her husband, Patrick, is a rising executive in the food industry. When Patrick snags a lucrative promotion, he convinces Erin to buy their dream house – a behemoth teardown that will bring them happiness. Initially things go well. Patrick is busy launching a cutting edge line of doughnuts, and Erin has her unlimited decorating budget. Success, however, brings resentment from their friends. Erin’s best friend, Mary Fran, feels snubbed as the McNultys move up the economic and social ladders. As she grows increasingly envious, Mary Fran slowly chips away at Erin’s fabulous new life, snatching pieces for herself (including Patrick). Erin finally realizes her world is slipping away and spirals into an alcohol and food-fueled depression. Her salvation comes from an unlikely source – the very donuts that led her down this path, and their secret slimming solution. Slimming With Doughnuts takes a satirical look at upper middle class suburbia. The novel tells the story of four families caught up in the society of a Chicago suburb. The men toil in high-powered jobs. The women give up careers to ensure successful children. They have perfect lives, or so it seems. Behind closed doors they deal with insecurity, alcoholism, infidelity, financial despair, and the general impossibility of being perfect.
