Know the Different Types of Salads
Salads
It seems there are more salad recipes available every year. It is a good thing that Salads can be classified into different types, so you can narrow down your choices. There are six basic types of salads: green, vegetable, bound, entree, fruit, and dessert. Most people are familiar with green and vegetable verities. Bound Salads include any type made with a thick sauce such as potato salad, chicken salad or macaroni salad. Entree Salads include Caesar, Cobb, and Chef Salad. Fruit salad is self-explanatory, and dessert Salads are often made with gelatin or whipped topping.
When you choose a salad, it helps to know what kind you want to serve. Green salad is a wonderful side dish. It can even become a main dish in some cases. Vegetable Salads include three-bean salad or any salad that is made of any vegetables other than lettuce.
Dessert salads have developed into an art form in the northern Midwest. With recipes for Snickers Salad, Cookie Salad and many other similar recipes, dessert salads are becoming very popular at potlucks and large gatherings.
Entree salads are usually served as an entire meal. They frequently include a meat such as chicken, seafood, or steak. The meat may be mixed with the greens or laid on top or on the side. These kinds of salads are usually served for lunch, though you can find them occasionally used as an evening meal.
Pasta salads fall into the bound salad category, even though many do not have a thick sauce that holds it together. Pasta salad can take many forms. Some have an Italian flair, while others are extremely Asian in flavor. You can also find a lot of recipes that fall in between. Because of this, pasta salad is extremely versatile and can be used as a meal or as an appetizer served before the entree. They can be filled with lots of ingredients, or kept light. Pasta salad is also a good choice for potlucks, parties and other large gatherings. They travel well and keep well without separating or falling into disarray.
